U.S. Air Drive awards 3D Techniques $7.65m contract for steel 3D printer tech demonstrator

3D Techniques has acquired an extra $7.65 million from the U.S. Air Drive to develop a large-format superior steel additive manufacturing know-how demonstrator.

The 2-year contract marks the second part of a mission that was first introduced in 2023 to help the event of large-scale ‘hypersonic-relevant’ 3D printing capabilities.

In a press launch, the additive manufacturing pioneer stated the extension of its program – often known as Giant-format Steel 3D Printer Superior Know-how Demonstrator (GEN-IIDMP-1000) – will exhibit key applied sciences wanted for 3D printing massive, high-temperature steel buildings related to high-speed flight working environments and purposes.

The event work is being carried out at 3D Techniques’ San Diego, California and Rock Hill, South Carolina places and is anticipated to be accomplished by September 2027. The corporate hasn’t disclosed any outcomes from the mission’s preliminary part however stated it has demonstrated quite a few applied sciences that may be utilized to the demonstrator and its current line-up of steel 3D printers.

“We’re pleased with the progress we’ve made to date in our collaboration with the U.S. Air Drive,” stated Dr. Michael Shepard, vp, aerospace & protection section, 3D Techniques. “We‘ve efficiently demonstrated quite a few revolutionary applied sciences beneath this program and it’s thrilling to see these applied sciences mature each for this large-scale system in addition to our commercially accessible printers.”
